Featured plant- Maples
Every month we will highlight a plant that is either looking especially good now or deserves a mention.
This month our eye turns to the many varieties of Maples. Maples come in a large variety of sizes and shapes. Some such as the Japanese Maples (Acer palmatum spp) are prized for their lovely shapes and beautiful autumn colour. They are small, shallow rooted trees so will grow well in pots.
If you have a bit of room in your garden and want a decorative shade tree one Maple to consider is a Lipstick Maple. These are a variety of the Canadian Maple which have magnificent autumn colour. They are also tolerant of occasional boggy situations. Cultivars include ‘October Glory’ and ‘Autumn Blaze’
Acer plantanoides ‘Crimson Sentry’ is a narrow growing Maple that is great for planting down driveways or pathways. It also features dark purple leaves making it a great contrast tree.
Autumn colouring has already begun which makes it a great time to pick out a maple if you have been thinking of planting one in your garden.
